Black Enterprise Entrepreneur’s Conference Photo Recap

Things have been so busy I haven’t had time to keep you guys up-to-date. I know this is old news now, but back in May I shot another event for Black Enterprise… their Entrepreneur’s Conference in Chicago. Wow, there was a lot going on. I had a six page shot sheet and often needed to be in 2 (sometimes 3) places at the same time. Some how I managed… it was all about timing and trying to never stay in one place too long.

The event was held in Chicago, downtown at the Hilton Chicago. Turns out this hotel is pretty historic. Remember the movie Home Alone? Parts of that movie were filmed in this hotel. Anyway, I was up and down in the elevator and going from ballroom to ballroom. At times I wished for roller skates (I can’t skate) or at least a scooter. I was so busy, I the only time I was outside was on my way from the airport to the hotel and back again. It was a lot of work, but as always I had a great time.

Every now and then I found  myself in a session where I wished I could take notes. The information and knowledge being shared was tremendous. Some speakers included supermodel Beverly Johnson, Tavis Smiley, Jeffrey Wright, Marcus Samuelsson and Damon John. There were also the business celebrities like Janet Bryant Howroyd and Quintin Primo III.

Teman Evans, Beverly Johnson and Al Nelson give the audience advice about advantages and pitfalls of being on reality TV.

One of the popular sessions dealt with angel investors (how to attract them and how to become one). I have to admit, after catching some of the advice Damon John was giving, I’ve begun to watch Shark Tank. Another popular session dealt with building your brand through reality TV. I never realized some many people wanted to put their lives on exhibit. Of yeah… I almost forgot about Facebook and Twitter. Beverly Johnson actually suggested that people put cameras up in every room of their house. Then after a few days, watch it and see how you feel. Well, after that session everyone was trying to get photos with Beverly Johnson and give their business cards to the panelists… hoping for that one connection to get discovered. Google held a bootcamp on using AdWords, and SEO. I tried to linger in there a little bit so I could pick up a few useful tidbits.

At the same time the adults were getting schooled, there were sessions for the teens. The Teenpreneur Conference was quite impressive. Shout outs to the people that put those sessions together. The teens had some great questions for the speakers and some them have some cool businesses.

Actor Jeffrey Wright, Founder & Vice Chairman of Taia Lion Resources gives advice about doing business in Africa.

During a one-on-one conversation, Tavis Smiley discussions the fallout from his decision to challenge President Barack Obama on his policies. He says he’s treating the President no different than any previous POTUS.

A one-on-one conversation with world-renowned chef, Marcus Samuelsson. He talks about his new book, his life and his journey to fame.

Rev. Jesse Jackson was in the house during the awards gala on the last night.

Kim Coles and Michael Baisden were two of the judges during the elevator pitch contest where the lucky winner received a check for $10,000.
